Have you used your urine fertilizer for food production?

Yes, since 2021! We have been growing barley using urine fertilizer for beer production in Sweden. The barley is malted and brewed by Gotlands Bryggeri. Although the beer has not yet been sold, we taste it annually to refine the flavour and are working on scaling up production.

Is it safe?

Absolutely. Our fertilizer meets stringent safety regulations, including: 

• U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for pathogen and heavy metal limits. 

• SPCR 178, Sweden’s quality standard for source-separated wastewater fractions like urine. 

We are currently working together with other fertilizer producers to create a new certification/label for more sustainable fertilizers that incentivises and rewards farmers for using these.
